Guide

How Private Jet Charter Works, Step by Step

On-demand charter lets you fly privately without owning a jet or buying a membership. Here is exactly how it works, from your first quote request to wheels-up.

The basics

What on-demand charter actually means

On-demand charter is the simplest way to fly private. You pay for one trip at a time, on the aircraft that fits that specific journey, with no long-term commitment.

Unlike fractional ownership (where you buy a share of one airframe) or a jet card (where you pre-pay for hours at a fixed rate), on-demand charter is pure pay-as-you-fly. As a broker, Private JetOne is not tied to a single fleet. For each request we search the market of FAA Part 135 operators and match the right aircraft to your route, passenger count, and budget. That independence means you get aircraft choice and competitive pricing rather than whatever one company happens to own.

No membership

No initiation fee, no annual dues, and no card deposit. You only ever pay for the trips you actually fly.

No ownership

You never buy or maintain an aircraft. The operator carries the asset, the crew, the insurance, and the maintenance.

Full flexibility

Switch aircraft size, route, or date between trips. Each charter is priced and confirmed on its own.

Step by step

From quote to wheels-up in six steps

A charter follows the same clear path every time. Here is what happens at each stage and what you can expect from our team.

1. Share your trip

Send a city pair and date. Add passengers, luggage, pets, and timing if you have them. A route and date alone are enough to start.

2. Receive options

We search Part 135 operators and return aircraft options with category, capacity, range, and an all-in price range, usually within the hour.

3. Choose and confirm

Pick the aircraft that fits. We vet the operator's certification, safety rating, and insurance, then lock the trip with a signed charter agreement.

4. Pre-flight planning

We coordinate FBO terminals, catering, ground transport, passenger details, and any special requests so everything is ready before departure.

5. Day of travel

Arrive at the private FBO 15-20 minutes before departure. No security lines. Walk from the lounge straight to the aircraft and board.

6. After the flight

Land closer to your real destination, deplane in minutes, and your account manager follows up on the next leg whenever you need it.

Choosing aircraft

Matching the jet to the journey

The right category depends on distance, passenger count, and luggage. These are the broad classes we draw from, with representative range and capacity.

  • Turboprops (e.g. King Air 350) suit short regional hops of 1-2 hours and can use the smallest runways.
  • Light jets (e.g. Citation CJ3, Phenom 300) carry 6-7 passengers for trips up to roughly 3 hours, ideal for routes like TEB to MVY.
  • Midsize and super-midsize (e.g. Citation XLS, Challenger 350) add stand-up cabins and 3-5 hour range for coast-aware US flying.
  • Heavy and ultra-long-range (e.g. Gulfstream G650, Global 6000) cross oceans nonstop with 12-16 passengers in a full cabin.

Pricing

How charter pricing is built

Charter is quoted as a range, not a fixed sticker price, because several moving factors set the final number for your specific trip.

Rather than publishing a single hourly figure that would be misleading, we price each leg from real cost drivers. Understanding them helps you control spend, for example by being flexible on dates, accepting a slightly smaller cabin, or catching an empty-leg repositioning flight at a discount.

Aircraft and time

Larger categories cost more per hour, and total flight time across all legs is the single biggest factor.

Repositioning

If the jet must ferry empty to your departure airport, those positioning hours are reflected in the quote.

Fees and crew

Fuel, landing and handling fees, overnight crew costs, de-icing, and peak-day demand all move the price.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a membership or to own an aircraft to charter a private jet?

No. On-demand charter is fully pay-as-you-fly. Private JetOne charges no membership fees and requires no jet card deposit or fractional ownership. You request a quote for a specific route and date, accept the aircraft option you like, and pay only for that trip. There is no obligation between flights and no upfront capital commitment.

How far in advance do I need to book a private jet charter?

For domestic US routes a charter can often be arranged in as little as 4 to 8 hours, subject to aircraft and crew availability. Booking 24 to 72 hours ahead gives the widest choice of aircraft and the best pricing. International trips, large groups, and peak periods such as holidays and major events should be confirmed days or weeks in advance because aircraft and slots are limited.

What drives the cost of a private jet charter?

Pricing is driven by aircraft category, flight time, and routing. The main cost drivers are the size and class of jet (turboprop, light, midsize, super-midsize, heavy, or ultra-long-range), the distance and duration of each leg, repositioning or ferry flights when the aircraft is not already at your departure airport, fuel prices, landing and handling fees, overnight crew costs, and peak-day demand. We quote ranges rather than fixed prices because each of these factors moves the final number.

Which airports can private jets use?

Private jets can access roughly 5,000 airports in the United States, compared with the few hundred served by scheduled airlines. That includes major hubs like New York Teterboro (TEB), Westchester (HPN), and Newark (EWR) as well as smaller regional and executive fields close to your final destination. Departing from a dedicated FBO terminal means no commercial security lines, and arriving at a closer airport can cut significant ground time.

Is chartering a private jet safe?

Yes. Private JetOne sources aircraft from operators that hold the appropriate FAA Part 135 certification and that maintain strong third-party safety ratings such as ARGUS, Wyvern, or IS-BAO registration. Every flight is operated by professional, type-rated two-pilot crews on aircraft under a continuous maintenance program. We confirm operator credentials, insurance, and aircraft documentation before any trip is released.
